What are the different types of allergy testing?

You may be a candidate for one or more of the following allergy tests:

Blood tests

Blood tests look for specific markers that indicate you’re allergic to certain substances, helping your allergist properly diagnose your condition. They simply take a sample of your blood and send it to a lab for analysis.

Skin prick testing

During a skin prick test, your specialist pricks your skin with tiny amounts of potential allergens. They wait for a specified period and look for signs of allergic reactions (raised red bumps) on your skin.

Patch testing

Patch testing is similar to skin prick testing, but your specialist places patches on your skin rather than pricking it. Patch testing can detect allergies to certain allergens you may encounter. You might wear the patches for 96 hours or as directed by your provider.

Pulmonary lung-function testing

Lung function testing involves breathing tests that detect asthma and allergy-related breathing difficulties. You breathe into or out of specialized devices that help your provider evaluate lung function.

Food elimination diet

Your specialist may ask you to eliminate certain foods from your diet to see if bothersome symptoms subside. Doing so helps screen for food allergies.
