Marching to the beat of your own drummer…the Allergic March
The “allergic march” is the progression of allergic disease that occurs from eczema to later developing food allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma.

The “allergic march” is the progression of allergic disease that occurs from eczema to later developing food allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Eczema is an inflammatory condition of the skin that causes redness, scaly and intense itching. Many patients have food allergies or environmental allergies that worsen the rash. Eczema usually begins at 2 years of age.

Food allergies are caused by an overreaction of your body’s immune system to specific proteins in foods. The most common food allergies are milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, peanut, tree nuts and sesame. Food allergies begin around 1 year old or when the child begins eating the trigger food.

Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is also caused by overreaction of your body’s immune system but this time to proteins in of the environment. Examples are pollens such as those of grass, trees, weeds, and ragweed, but also includes animal dander (like your cat or dog) or mold spores. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, postnasal drip, runny nose or eyes, nasal congestion, itchy or red eyes, and sinus pain and pressure.

Asthma is an inflammatory condition of the lungs that causes shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing. It is mostly allergic (same triggers as food and environmental allergies) but can also be triggered by perfumes, infections, stress, exercise, dust, chemicals and change in weather (typically temperature and/or humidity).

If you think you need help with halting your allergic march and just can’t do it yourself anymore, or you would like to be tested or treated for your allergies and believe you may be a good candidate for allergen immunotherapy, Dr. Wendt and her team staff at Relieve Allergy, Asthma & Hives would love to help.
